COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – More and more apartment complexes, hotel rooms, storefronts and sports arenas are coming to downtown Colorado Springs.
The Downtown Partnership of Colorado Springs found, despite the pandemic, more businesses open than closed last year. The city center also expects around 30 storefronts to open this year.
“If you had asked me a year ago at that time when things were a little darker, I was very worried and I don’t want to minimize the fact that our small businesses are still suffering, we still have to really support the local, ”said Susan Edmondson of The Downtown Partnership of Colorado Springs.
Approximately 3,000 apartment units will be added downtown as there is more demand for multi-family properties.
Currently, two hotels are under construction downtown: Hyatt Place Hotel in Kiowa and Nevada, and Marriott in South Tejon and Costilla. When these are completed, the city center will double the number of hotel rooms in just four years.
“You’ll start to see the skyline change a bit … They’re all going to places that were just aboveground parking lots or empty, abandoned areas, so it really adds to the vibrancy by filling things up,” Edmondson said.
With the recent opening of Weidner Field and the opening of Ed Robson Arena in the fall, Edmondson said, “We are envisioning what I think is a good and a busy summer season. Tourism projections look good.
